UPM Graduates Life: Big scale IT projects’ from Helsinki headquarters to Fray Bentos pulp mill in Uruguay and back
My first assignment at UPM was on a project called ERP Vision implementing new SAP S/4 HANA. This IT renewal is one of the biggest strategic projects at UPM, enabling new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for Pulp Business and Finance. My tasks revolved around planning and delivering the Finance organization’s change management activities within the project. We wanted to secure business readiness by planning the change, communicating it efficiently with stakeholders and by training 1400 people globally across 6 different countries.

Mejorar la gestión forestal de los bosques
Un estudio en el que participa el Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC) demuestra que, para poder diferenciar e implantar nuevos sistemas de gestión de los bosques acordes con los retos ambientales de la actualidad, es imprescindible que los gestores tengan experiencia y conocimientos previos de selvicultura, así como una formación precisa en estos nuevos sistemas.
Los objetivos de estos nuevos métodos como la creación y mantenimiento de bosques complejos que favorezcan mayores tasas de biodiversidad deben estar claramente definidos.

La deforestación, la agricultura y el aumento de la temperatura se ceban con los bosques viejos
Los bosques son cada vez más jóvenes y sus árboles no llegan tan alto como antes. A la deforestación provocada por la tala y el avance agroganadero se han unido el aumento de las temperaturas o la concentración de dióxido de carbono (CO2) como nuevos enemigos del bosque viejo. Un estudio estima ahora que el área forestal más reciente se ha triplicado en el último siglo mientras se han reducido las zonas boscosas más antiguas del planeta.

Keeping production up and running in exceptional times

Staying sustainable at sea
Dutch shipping company Royal Wagenborg transports UPM’s pulp from Finland to continental Europe. It’s a partnership grounded in sustainability.
Founded more than 100 years ago, Royal Wagenborg is today one of Europe’s largest players in dry-bulk shipping. From its headquarters in the Netherlands, the company manages more than 200 vessels performing some 4,500 voyages each year. This includes a monthly voyage for UPM, transporting pulp from Finland to Spain, and then onward to Italy.

UPM in Uruguay sets a great example of the extent of contractor management
Contractors play an integral role in UPM’s operations in Uruguay. Whether at the Fray Bentos pulp mill, the Paso de los Toros construction site, on eucalyptus plantations, or in carinata fields or wood transportation, we want to ensure that our contractors and their employees enjoy exactly the same working conditions as all UPMers.
“Our contractors’ working conditions are a fundamental part of our social responsibility agenda. This point was addressed in our internal Human Rights Assessment, which highlights the unique characteristics of our contractor management system in Uruguay,” states Nina Norjama, social responsibility director at UPM.

Construction of the first housing blocks in Paso de los Toros completed

(UPM, Paso de los Toros, 5 May 2020) As part of the construction of UPM's Paso de los Toros pulp mill in Durazno department in central Uruguay, the housing solutions plan is progressing and the construction of the first housing blocks in Charrúa neighborhood in Paso de los Toros is completed. These blocks will be occupied by local workers from several Uruguayan companies as of May.
