Pulp Business  -  The Pulp business area has four modern pulp mills - three in Finland and one in Uruguay - and forest plantation operations in Uruguay. The total annual production capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of high quality pulp. The Pulp business employs about 1,500 people.
UPM aims to be one of the leaders in the pulp market and a reliable long-term partner for our customers.
UPM’s versatile pulp products range from northern softwood and Birch pulp to Eucalyptus pulp made from plantation-based wood. We only use wood  from sustainably managed forests and plantations. PULP PRODUCTION
UPM has three modern and eco-efficient pulp mills in Finland and a state-of-the-art pulp mill and forest plantation operations in Uruguay. The products range from northern softwood pulp and northern hardwood pulp to eucalyptus pulp made from fast growing plantation wood. The wood used is controlled and from sustainable sources. The total capacity is 3.3 million tonnes of high quality pulp.

UPM's pulp mills also produce renewable energy in their recovery boilers. The mills produce more energy than they consume and thus provide CO2-neutral biomass-based electricity for the Nordic and Uruguayan markets.

Pulp Production in Finland
UPM has three modern eco-efficient pulp mills in Finland: Kaukas, Kymi and Pietarsaari. These three pulp mills have a production capacity of 2.1 million tonnes.
In addition to producing market pulp, the Finnish pulp mills create significant cost synergies for UPM as they are integrated with paper mills.

In Finland UPM produces both bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) from birch and bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) from pine and spruce. The wood used originates mainly from PEFC certified Finnish forests.

Pulp production in Uruguay
UPM's operations in Uruguay include the Fray Bentos pulp mill and the Forestal Oriental plantation operations. In addition, harbour activities at the Fray Bentos mill site and deep-sea port in Nueva Palmira are closely linked to our operations.

The Fray Bentos pulp mill in Uruguay has a production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) from eucalyptus.
UPM's plantation forestry company Forestal Oriental supplies the wood to the Fray Bentos mill.

Environmental compliance is a natural part of our operations in Uruguay. The mill was designed with the latest best available technologies and is one of the most modern pulp mills in the world.
UPM's operations have a significant impact on Uruguay's economy. It is estimated that the mill increased Uruguay's gross domestic product (GDP) by almost 2%.
Our strong commitment to the community is also seen through UPM's involvement, both directly and via the UPM Foundation, in several local projects.
