Stora Enso continues development work in Guangxi, China

Summary:
Stora Enso responds to criticism towards the company in Mika Koskinen’s documentary “Red Forest Hotel” and related articles. Stora Enso says the documentary is largely out-dated.

The company appreciates open discussion of international projects but Koskinen’s documentary did not serve the interests of locals in Guangxi or Stora Enso. The piece explains how the company operates in China, for example, that it promotes sustainable local business and works together with local officials and village communities.

The company invests not only in land and plantations but also in developing villages. Stora Enso works with the UNDP and the World Bank to support local communities.

The company supports local development and works with schools and universities. Stora Enso has a zero tolerance policy towards coercion and violence in conflict resolution and this has been communicated to all parties. Land lease discrepancies were detected in 2009 and Stora Enso took systematic action to correct faults.

Over 4,000 contracts were reviewed and unclear cases have been or are being renegotiated. Stora Enso does not operate in areas where there is violence. Stora Enso has one set of values that apply all over the world. The company says it does not claim to be perfect, it listens and learns. The company does not turn its back on the locals but continues to promote good practices in China.
